It seems that the common ancestor the Green and White Martians came
from was the Chaos Martian, which constantly burned with power.  As
part of cleaning up the galaxy for their eventual role as Guardians,
the ancient Oans defeated the Chaos Martians and hypnotized them into
fearing fire so they would never be tempted to use their true power.

J'onn managed to break through this hereditary hypnosis and has now
become a burning Chaos Martian.  This is a bad thing.  Even the
demonic supervillainess he's been dealing with considers it a bad
thing.  *Vandal Savage* considers it a bad thing, and you know how
tough he is.
