There are many places in the UK where marriages are performed with the registrar coming along for the ride--hotels, stately homes, and even Roman Catholic (and other) churches. But the RC is probably the most unrecognized church Over Here--remember, the heir to the throne or the reigning monarch may marry anyone he wants, except a Roman Catholic, by law, or he/she loses his/her place in the succession. We're talking Henry VIII, The Old Pretender, and the Hanovers here. They'll do anything to keep a Catholic off the throne. Whether or not a couple can marry in the C of E depends on many little decisions, some made by each priest. Needless to say, the couple have to belong to the C of E, which most Britons don't these days.
