Rick,

You could use an Aqua C  Remora on your 55g, or even a Remora Pro.  If you want
to hang it on the back of your 55g.  If you prefer to put it in the sump, you
could use the Aqua C Urchin or Urchin Pro.

The benefit of the Pro models is that if you upgrade, the skimmer is rated up to
125g and you'll not have to buy a larger skimmer.

Can you overskim?  Yes.  Is it bad?  Not in my experience.  The more DOCs you
pull out, the less A-N-N cycle can take place, which is a good thing.
