Mineral deposit cleaning

Any household advice on cleaning the mineral deposits that collect on
the sides and tops of tanks?  I don't know the chemical content, only
that it is white and not thick and very tenacious.  It is from the
city wells in West Texas if that suggests anything.  It is carried
from the tanks by the air bubbles which I keep for my pleasure more
than for the fish's sake.
