unrelated to your question, how big was it when you got it? how long did it 
take to get to 12" and what size of tank do you have it in?

I'd go with the styrofoam box, or a cooler, and a garabage bag of water.  
Heat the ice packs if you are worried about the cooler weather (put the 
pack below the bag).
