I have finally given up on mine and just removed the surface skimmer. My HOT filter kept "drying" out... water levels in the filter would start out just fine but in less than 2 days the filter would be almost completely dry.... water still pumping in and out, but VERY noisy and lots of air mixed with the outflow... Those darned adjusters on the Fluval surface skimmer do not seem to work very well... water is either flowing very fast down the intake or not flowing at all... when the water flow is faster, you get a large intake of air as well. Note: I also tried that skimmer on my Fluval 303 filter and had the same problem you had, where the filter just locks up with too much air.
