The rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants group would probably have many lighting guru's because light plays a very important part of plant growth. I think I read that flourescent bulbs have a short life (maybe 6 months) before the light quality dims too much to be useful for growing plants, but the light bulb itself should produce some amount of light for much longer than that. Other than that make sure there is a glass or plastic tank cover between the hood and water in the tank and make sure you don't let the lights run more than 10-12 hours per day. E.Otter
