They don't really need the filter while they are so tiny, as long as you do lots of water changes. Remember when you do turn the filter on, that they could get sucked in. I used a small sponge filter for mine attached to a pump. I also used a gang valve so that I could turn the flow right down low, and covered the entire thing with a piece cut from a pair of ladies tights then attached that with an elastic band round the top to stop anyone getting sucked in accidently.
