Yes, this is called "impressioning" (and time for more Googlejuice). Cutting a key to fit a dismantled lock is easy for any non-locksmith with the slightest inclination to metal bashing. Impressioning needs a certain "feel" as a locksmith though. It's often easiest with a soft plastic or wooden key (lolly sticks are good). Some locks impression more easily than others. Super-high security Kabas (the flat keys with shallow holes drilled in the sides) are farcically easy to do.
