Yah, I have brought a couple of radios along as carry-on items, but I would be very scared of shipping them as luggage, no matter how well packed. As Jeff mentions, there are too many items such as 100-lb steel tool chests rocketing down the conveyors!
A few years back, on our last day in Bali, my girlfriend grabbed a very nice wooden and glass medicine chest. Guess who got to sit on Garuda airlines with a medicine chest in his lap for 24 hours.
Jeff And, you're right, there was NO way we were going to let the baggage monkeys ANY where near it.
