If you mean batter vs. reso head, they sound very different, so try both and
pick the one that you like best.

If you mean inside the drum vs. outside, mounting the mic outside the drum
picks up the sound that is closer to what you hear. Mounting the mic inside
picks up a lot less of everything else in the kit, but the sound inside the
drum can be very different than the sound from outside. Also the sound from
the back of the head is out of phase with the sound from the front, which
can cause problems when the natural sound mixes with the amplified sound
from a speaker.
