What about the composer who writes music for a hymn that already has a perfectly good tune? Why should they do that any more than someone inspired by a tune writing new words? Do you sing "All hail the power of Jesus name" to Miles Lane and nothing else?
FWIW: The text to the Christmas carol, Away in a Manger, has had not one but _two_ quite well-known tunes associated with it over the years. Nevertheless, in 1974 I wrote a new tune for the soprano soloist at my local church in Brooklyn. Chaulk it up to youthful . . . take your pick. :-)
In 2000, Linda Ronstadt recorded it on her Christmas CD, A Merry Little Christmas. It gets quite a few performances each season and the mechanicals aren't too bad, either. ;-)
