For 'dark' music with unusual harmonies, you could try the late madrigals and motets of Carlo Gesualdo. A good recording: Gesualdo Consort/Place CD QS 6210 (ASV). Go to www.musiclink.co.uk/gesualdo/ for a sample. Amazon lists much else. An inexpensive choice would be Naxos 8.550742: the complete 5-part sacred music (Oxford Camerata dir. Summerly). To discover why Gesualdo's music is so strange and dark, read www.btinternet.com/~rubberneck/gesualdo.html Alan Jones
