sacred readings

Our adult choir is performing Shaw's "Many Moods" this year.  We are only singing 
three of the suites.  I would like to intersperse them with meaningful literary short 
readings.  Obviously scripture is an option, but I was wondering if any of you could 
suggest some others that would add to the "Mood" of the evening.  My literary 
background is lacking.  Thanks
