It was wonderful to hear someone familiar with the brilliant quality of English men and boy collegiate and cathedral choirs. I have quite a selection, mostly older vinyl recordings. One with a Christmas theme I would highly recommend is 'A Meditation on Christ's Nativity,' by the choir of St. John's College Cambridge under George Guest (recorded about 40 years ago, there's no date on it). Like the more famous King's College Cambridge choir, these ancient collegiate choirs have a marvellous tonal quality, most wistful in largo passages; the young adult voices are choral scholars and the boy trebles are amazingly talented and disciplined. And just as an aside, for aficionados of this sound, one of the greatest men and boys collegiate 'type' choirs is surprisingly very little known, even among choral music buffs: that is the choir of the Temple Church in London. The great choral composers E.J. Hopkins and Walford Davies were organist choirmaster there for many years, respectively. cheers, L.George Gray [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---------- In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (ron sherlock) wrote: >Sunday 30th December 2003 > >Advent > >The period of preparation for the Christian celebration of the birth >of Jesus. > >Some of you might be interested in listening ONLINE to the annual >Service for Advent with Carols, broadcast live from the Chapel of St >John's College, Cambridge, England. > >The Choir of St John's College is considered by many to be one of the >finest of its type in the world. > >You can find full details of the service on my site. > >Please note you will require RealOne Player installed on your computor >to listen to BBC programmes ONLINE > >UK Cathedral Music Links > >http://www.cathedralmusiclinks.org.uk > >A Peaceful Advent to all > >Ron Sherlock
