I can relate to your story. I am now in a cover band for a year. Played bass for about five, and always had access to giutars. Now in my late 30's (along with my band mates) we are working hard to play the music we all loved as teens. My own teenager thinks its great, and we both listen to each others style of music. I borrow his Cold CD, or Static X, he borrows my Misfits, or Metallica CD's. Our band work and relate to each other very well, because this is what we have always wanted to do, but always had the responsibilities of family, bills, etc. Now, with kids older, and extra time on our hands, we are perfecting the sound we want to accomplish. We play no tune for a crowd less we can do it flawless. As far as the downtuning you mentioned, we do some songs in regular tune, and some downtuned half. It all depends what sounds good, and can be vocally achieved better. We have the luxury of just switching guitars at gigs. That small difference can make some songs a litte easier on the vocal cords. We are not big time by any means, and probably never will be, but we all have the attitude that we could be. Only been together little over a year, and we are getting more and more gigs, as people hear us. If you ever get to PA...look us up. It's worth it.
