Re: Old Sport parts and repetitions

Old Sport, as far as most folks I know of that play it these days,
came from my uncle, Albert Hash. He picked up the song from a fiddler
named Bill Northcutt who recorded at least two LPs on the Stoneway(I
believe) in the mid to late 60s. Albert picked up Hangman's Reel and
Old Sport off of one of the Northcutt LPs.

I don't have either of the LPs handy here at work, but I'm almost
positive Northcutt plays each part twice on Old Sport, while Albert
played the second part only once.

Interestingly enough, Northcutt's rendition of Hangman's Reel is in
Black Mountain Blues tuning and bears little resemblence in the end,
to what Albert transformed it into and the version most folks play
these days. Anyhow, I wouldn't feel too guilty about playing the
second part twice anyhow, and I'm almost positive Northcutt(who the
tune came from, as far as alot of folks are concerned, whether they
know it or not) plays each part twice.
