I learned all the shapes and sounds early on and they opened up the fretboart to me. I know if I'm at G and I need a C, I go up a perfect fourth, one string, one fret, or one string, two frets between the 2nd and 3rd string. This isn't really an "approach" to fretboard knowledge as far as I know, it's just what happened. If I was some kind of marketing-savvy weasel I could probably turn it into an approach, copywright it, and sell a bunch of books on it, but I'm not. Anyway, knowing the fretboard and actually being able to actually read up there were, to my dismay, two completely separate things. But it does help a lot.
