I know that performances > have been done with these options but are there any recordings as well? I don't know that Ives considered these parts optional. The AMP publication seems to indicate that they are, but the history of the work (especially upon Ives' hearing of Mr. Theremin's invention) seems to indicate otherwise. The forthcoming Ives Society Critical Edition should answer any questions. http://www.charlesives.org has been updated. Follow the link for Best CDs to see a listing of recordings of the Fourth. Sorry, but none of the descriptions indicates whether the "optional" instruments were used in the recordings, but you may find some interesting choices you didn't know about. You may also want to check the link to Yale for the Descriptive Catalog (nice piece of work, that!). dwight theodore presser co
