"The Gunslinger" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote in message news:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... > How do I start into that dreaded atonal world so offensive to my tonal ears? Hmm. Google groups is being weird again - I can't see the post I made in reply to this question yesterday, even though I can see it from another Usenet server (which I can't post to). I know my suggestions weren't all atonal. The question was about starting into the atonal world. My suggestions are at the easy listening end of the spectrum. Zappa's Civilization III is a double cd, not a single track. It's mostly tonal, though I'm sure parts are atonal, or at least highly chromatic/dissonant. I'm not sure much serious study - from a classical direction at least- has been made of Zappa's music, although I'm sure someone will do this at some point. But `the girl in the magnesium dress` and `ruth is sleeping`, both from The Yellow Shark disk of performances by Ensemble Modern strike me as very Schoenbergian, and perhaps entirely atonal.
