I just received this from my friend and thought I'd pass it along for those interested to mark their calendars: TO CHARLES IVES December 2, 2003, Berlin: Pianist Heather O'Donnell announces the launch of the Responses to Charles Ives project. May 19, 2004 will mark the 50th year since the death of American composer Charles Ives. Many contemporary composers of various nationalities or aesthetic orientations continue to cite Ives as an essential and integral influence on their own music. His resonance and impact on contemporary music continues to be strongly perceived as we enter the 21st-Century. In commemoration of Ives's life, music, and legacy, seven composers have been commissioned to write a piano piece for a series of programs. The following composers have created a new work for this project: Frederic Rzewski (U.S./Belgium) Michael Finnissy (England) George Flynn (U.S.) James Tenney (Canada) Oliver Schneller (Germany/U.S.) Walter Zimmermann (Germany) Sidney Corbett (U.S.) Together these composers display contemporary expressions of Ives's legacy: fierce individuality, progressiveness, idealism, improvisatory talent, use of the vernacular in concert music, political engagement, or activity as pianist-composers. Heather O'Donnell will premiere the program at Berlin’s prestigious MaerzMusik Festival on March 21st 2004, MaerzMusik will also host a performance of Ives's 4th Symphony with Sylvain Chambreling conducting the RSO Berlin. Performances will continue throughout the 2004-05 season in America, Europe and Asia. The commissioned pieces will be recorded for Mode Records and released in the summer of 2004.
