How do I start into that dreaded atonal world so offensive to my tonal

Ease into it.
Either that, or go headlong into some of the most abrasive pieces of
them all. I usually suggest Xenakis' orchestral pieces. They're loud,
noisy, but also very clear.
The 'ease into' approach tends to stress ever-mounting subtlety in the
develpment of style, which may lead you to think that atonal music is
more difficult than modal or tonal or just plain consonant music. It
isn't. You just appraoch the musical perception from a different point
of view, just as you would never think of seeing sunsets or fruit still
lifes in geometrically abstract painting.
