Well, John Lennon felt that the bent notes in his vocal part in "A Hard Day's Night" could not be written down in the usual way on music paper so that other musicians reading that would understand what the pitches were really supposed to be, i.e. would perform his (and PM's) song correctly. If a Beatle moderately interested in bringing blues influence to his pop music could feel that way, imo it's extremely likely that the same sort of thing has gone on in bluesy jazz many times.
