I'd guess that this is what he was told to play. Ringo may not be Bill 
Stewart or Tony Williams, but he proved many times over with the Beatles 
that he was capable of executing a more intricate fill than THUD-THUD-THUD.

Comparing the few extant recordings of the Beatles with Pete Best to those 
with Ringo, I can't single out anything in particular that Ringo could do 
technically that Pete couldn't, but I definitely hear more energy and life 
in Ringo's playing, and it helps the whole band.
