Not wanting to spend my entire life savings, I decided quite a while back to opt for the early 1980's mono re-issues of all the Beatles' Parlophone LP's, rather than trying to hunt down all the original issues. Most of these I either bought brand new when they were first released, or acquired very clean copies on Ebay. I have since bought a few original Parlophone 60's-era mono issues on Ebay (albeit not first-pressings, as indicated by the matrices in the run-out grooves), and tried a few back-to-back listening comparison tests with my 1980's re-issues. Allowing for a bit of surface noise from wear in the original issues, I still found that I preferred the 1980's re-issues, which simply sounded a little cleaner and more open. Maybe it would have been different if I had access to first pressings, but I wonder. Anyone else had a similar experience? (Please don't respond with any opinions on the relative merits of mono versus stereo - I'm not interested!) -- All follow-ups are directed to the newsgroup rec.music.beatles.moderated.
