The Elder was a total lump for sales, and pretty much universally hated by
fans (Though critics of course liked it because it was KISS as high-brow in
a way). Anyway, the band really started to slide in popularity after it came
out, and it was ignored by the handful of diehards that stayed with the band
over the years. Years later, at conventions and such, the album kept coming
up as requested material from fans to the point where the band retracted
their stance and decided that some of it was pretty good<g>. In the last
handful of years, it has a following that is as passionate towards it as
others are against it. Probably about 30% of fans swear allegiance to it,
20% are indifferent, and 50% still loathe it, but those numbers are
gradually shifting little by little towards an album that many marked as a
career killer. And all sides will attest that it is if nothing else, a step
in a different direction for the band, with no album before or after
sounding anything like it.
