Right! I remember when Marvin's album came out, I felt very strange enjoying it as much as I did. I just didn't expect it, that's all. Sure is an interesting day today: Phil is indicted for murder, Jacko's big train wreck finally happened....while Brian's about to embark on a SMiLE tour, and here we are debating whether Pet Sounds should be Win, Place, or Show. The Rubber Soul/Revolver/Pet Sounds/Sgt. Pepper metamorphosis reminds me of the old chicken and egg debate. If nothing else, the poll generated some thoughtful analyses like these. And it is heartening to see that we're able to talk about fine-tuning the order of finish here, rather than having to sulk because an album didn't even make the list. Go back twenty or thirty years and some of these now-obvious choices were totally missing in action. If someone had told me back in 1974 that Brian's work would be recognized the way it now is, I would have felt SOOOO much better. Back then it was hard to get any of my peers to take Brian seriously, let alone expect them to have any idea who he was. Of course I was in high school at the time, which may account for some of this. Honestly, I never let myself dream that things would end up where they are now.
