"Nine," this year's Tony winner (over "Gypsy") for best musical revival,
will close Dec. 14, its producers announced.
The musical will have played 23 previews and 285 regular performances.
("The Violet Hour" closes Dec. 21, and on Jan. 4, two veteran shows will
close - "Cabaret" and "Take Me Out.") "Nine," a production of the
Roundabout Theatre Company, opened in April and featured the Broadway
debut of big-screen star Antonio Banderas, who got good reviews as
womanizing filmmaker Guido Contini. Banderas was replaced by John Stamos
in October. Though "Nine" played to 72% capacity Thanksgiving week, the
previous week's shows filled only 62% of its seats. The producers
decided to pull the plug despite the traditional box office boost
expected from holiday season tourists.
