Fame, maybe. They may have read The Fir Tree by Hans Christian Andersen.

I never quite got that one, either. In all the years I've visited Rockefeller Center to see "The Tree," I've never once heard anyone ask who donated it. There may be a plaque on it somewhere, but I've never seen nor looked for one.

Some times the tree is donated for a "good" cause, as in 1966 when a Canadian tree was donated in celebration of the centennial of Confederation. In 2002, the tree was selected because the Rizzos of Bloomsbury, NJ, sent in a photograph of their tree and suggested it as a potential choice.

Most other times, like this year, the garden manager for the Rockefeller Center goes up in his whirly bird and spots a tree, then stops by to ask the tree's owners and if they'd like their tree to be "the tree."
