A few observations from a recent trip: A portion of I-190 in Mass. has been recently repaved, including part of the wiiide part (to keep road salt/spills out of Boston's drinking water). They haven't (yet?) painted the paved, non-travelled part green, like they did with the old pavement. They've erected big "I-190 ENDS 1 1/2 MILES AHEAD" near both ends. They look kind of temporary (erected on 4x4 wooden posts) but I suspect they are permanent. I see no need for them, I-190 has always ended where it does and there are no plans for expansion. They are fairly new (last month or two) Saw Mill Parkway (NY ref. 987D) has tenth mile markers on the same posts as the reference markers. Ones not an exact mile look like others now being installed in NY (white on green miles, green on white tenths) without route shields while exact miles have a tiny NY route shield on top (complete with 'SAW MILL PKWY' in teeny tiny letters inside) and "MILE nn" below vertically, everything white on green. No sign of construction at the I-84/I-87 non-junction other than it appears topsoil has been removed at the I-84/NY 300 cloverleaf for work next year. Where the far southern part of NY 17 is now routed on the Thruway they use 17 in a circle, implying a guide to reach NJ 17. On I-287 in the other direction, there is a sign for an exit to NJ 17 south (# in a circle) and NJ 17 North straight ahead, implying NJ 17 still reaches the state line. Later on a second sign in a NY route shield. I-287 (the "new" part, about 10 years old now) appears to have been ground down except where the painted strips go. I'm guessing it's to reduce noise. Appears deliberate, not wear. The dashed white lines are outlined on the sides by thin black strips to increase contrast of the white lines on concrete. Like this --> = = = = = where the equal signs themselves are black, the rest white (the space in between the equal sign lines is paint, the rest concrete) US 206 is no substitute for the missing I-95 gap. I-95 north of Philly has had its exits renumbered, with small signs reading "OLD EXIT xx". There are also 10th mile markers reading MILE 20 1/10 white on green, with the diagonal slash, and the word "MILE" much smaller. Even mile markers are no different than the others, they read "0/10" on the bottom. "Ghost" bridge pillars at the Betsy Ross Bridge/NJ90, plans for some route westward, I guess. Interesting power lines along the railroad (they are for the railroad with its own 20Hz power supply), with two or four 'hots' not the usual three. -- -Mike
