Possibly because SNCF review loadings and quotas a few days before. 
Eurostar have always done it - same situation cheap fare unavailable two 
months before, yet suddenly available a few days to go...

Travelling even on a lightly loaded TGV at night can't exactly be the 
best option...

Usually full fare or one of the more expensive leisure fare codes, yes.
