Why? I say he has a valid suit if the scholarship doesn't specify path of study. If it's based on need or on grades and he met the criteria he should get it. It's not a matter of supporting any one religion as it would apply to all religions and even non-religions (that is if there was a curriculum to study the non-existence of God) and the school met all other criteria of the scholarship (i.e. accreditation).
