I don't practice in Colorado, but a quick review of their statutes shows that a homestead (meaning a home you own and are living in at the time) has its first $45,000 in equity exempt from creditors. It does not appear that any particular action must be taken in advance to claim a homestead. But check with a local lawyer just to be sure. As far as I'm aware (and it was still true the last time I checked) only the states of Texas and Florida allow the full value of the equity in your home to be protected from creditors, irrespective of how much that equity may be.
