Hang on.  The prosecution wanted 15-20 years (and presumably the 
prosecution knows all the weaknesses in the cases that no-one else
has picked up on), and the judge over-rules him and goes much higher.
And you are using this as an example of the court being soft???

He'll be 75 when he is released (not sure how parole works, if there
is any ...).  Presumably at this point, he will not be a danger to
society any longer.  There's no point incarcerating someone out of
shear vindictiveness ... if you do that, you'll end up in the same
hole as our funny friends to the south, who have, per capita, 
incarcerated 10 times as many people as we have, and still have
higher violent crime rates.
