That's simply the number of switches on the plate.

1 gang          2 gang

|           |   |           |

etc.

Something to watch for though. I think they are rare now, but cheap 
light switches were sometimes only one-way. You will need two-way 
switches for staircases etc. where you have a light switch each end.
