You have no choice but to apply for the EAD.  USCIS will deny any TN
extension petition if the alien has filed an I-485.  Even when the TN
extension is submitted before the I-485 is filed, if the TN extension is
pending when the I-485 is filed, the TN extension petition will be denied
(unless there is a mistake).  USCIS checks everything on the computers
nowadays.
