Matti Narkia <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote > My question is: Can normal weight people also get type 2 diabetes? The conventional wisdom is that the cause of diabetes is three-fold: 1. Obesity 2. A genetic predisposition to insulin resistance 3. A genetic predisposition to pancreatic insufficiency If your genetic predisposition to insulin resistance and pancreatic insufficiency is sufficiently great, theoretically you could develop diabetes without being obese. But for the most part, I tell my patients who have a positive family history of diabetes but are not overweight, you're very unlikely to get it so don't worry about it. And I tell my patients who are obese and have no family history, you could easily develop diabetes if you don't lose weight. Matthew G. Beckwith, M.D. http://drbeckwith.com
