GAO: Nuke Plants Lack Cash For Cleanup A new report issued by the Congressional General Accounting Office has found that the owners of nearly half the nuclear power plants in the United States, including Indian Point in New York, do not have enough money in reserve to clean up the sites once they are decommissioned. Massachusetts Congressman Edward Markey warned taxpayers could be forced to pay billions in clean-up costs. He said "While happily pocketing their profits today, many plant owners are shirking their duty to save for tomorrow."
