Yes, do lunges with light weights but don't take the step back into place, instead press up into position and rock back comfortably, keeping both feet in place. Not stepping back into place takes pressure off the knees and lower back. You'll build up your knees for your treadmill routine. Also, be sure you are warming up your legs with in-place squats before you start walking.
