You can see for yourself via the book SERIOUS Training for Endurance Athletes
or merely look into the concept of LSD, long slow distance, at one of the
running newsgroups.

Many very successful athletes believe that you need to establish an aerobic
base for success.  This is done by running long distances at a slow rate and
takes quite a bit of discipline to keep your heart rate down.  Capillaires(sp?)
are developed, etc, this way.
