This question is deeper than it looks. People used to store clothers on hooks, or folded. The coat hanger is actually a pretty recent thing: one of the inventors (mighta been first, but maybe not) was Thomas Jefferson, but hooks or pegs for clothing go back about as far as you want to look. As gus pointed out, the viual picture of "coat rack" a lot of us form is a pole, often bentwood, with a bunch of hooks off it, but some people use it for a series of simple hooks mounted on a board.
