You may be able to make it cheaper, but will there be enough margin for a
profit and to pay for distribution? If you go through the normal
distribution channels - sell to wholesaler, who sells to retailers who sell
to customers - you need to make the product for $5 and you keep $5, which
means you sell to wholesale for $15 who sells it to Dealers for $20, who
sell it to the end user for $40.

If you go direct via Internet, say through eBay or banner ads at the right
partner sites, you still have to pay for advertising, shipping, support and
the like. Which means the customer will not pay $40 but at least $25 - so
you must determine if there are enough customers willing to pay $25 for
something you made for $5.

I think you are seeing the same process when you say that the product could
be made better and cheaper, and you still buy the product because it is
really needed. You most likely will come into the market at about the same
price you are paying now for it. So where is your competitive advantage?
What differentiates you from what is already on the market? This becomes
your PR and advertising mantra which must be promoted. At high costs.
Advertising is not cheap.
