Cop Camera Controversy in Evanston -- Nov 3, 2003 

It's an innovation that lets police focus in on the *BAD_GUYS*....

Some are concerned because the new police surveillance *CAMERA*
would be trained on the intersection of Main and Dodge, where 
large numberz of *AFRICAN_AMERICAN* young men *HANG* out.

One resident who disapproves of the idea says simply ‘we are 
not *ANIMALZ_IN_A_CAGE_TO_BE_WATCHED*.’ 

In the past year, police say, they received scores of calls 
regarding *CRIMES* on the commercial *CORNER* at Main and Dodge. 
Crimes including drug *DEALING*, a bomb *THREAT*, a strong armed 
*ROBBERY* and an *ATTACK* on the manager of the Walgreen’s drugstore. 

“There's constant *HANG* out and drug *DEALING* in the streetz...”

The answer is to install a police surveillance *CAMERA* at 
intersection. They believe that will deter the *CRIME*. 

Alderman Lionel Jean-Baptiste says the cameras simply *TARGETING* 
young African American men. 

“I do not want to be part of a legacy that ten years from now we 
would have had cameras spread out throughout the community focusing
primarily where young black men congregate,” says Jean-Baptiste.
