By claiming that his invented god or lord character was the Jewish
messiah would be my first guess.  Didn't sit very well with the Jews
of the time from what I can tell.  It took Roman intervention to make
Christianity as popular as it is today.  Paul might even be an early
invention of the RCC from what I can tell.
