This is one of the first issues that pops up when you mention home schooling: socialization. Excuse me, but why would I want my children socializing with bullies, gang bangers, drug pushers, and hookers. That may seem like a harsh analysis of our public schools, but my experience is that it is pretty close to the mark. Yes, home schoolers do get socialization. The difference is that parents have more control over whom they are socializing with. In my family's case, we have a large extended family, with kids of all ages. There are also many out-of-school activities like scouts and 4-H, as well as many church-based (synagogue-based, masjid-based, etc. based on your religious preference) activities for kids. Using these activities for socializing has a very positive impact on the kids by exposing them to other kids in a values-based environment. As a final note, please don't dismiss the socialization that home school kids have with adults. Home school kids tend to interact directly with adults far more often than kids in either public or private schools. Their interaction also tends to be with a wider array of adults. As a result, home school kids tend to be more mature at any given age because they have more experience with the real world. Jason Dee wrote: > I agree.
