http://www.locksley.com/6696/xmas.htm (This isn't my page, but my descriptive text) This site looks at the origination of many Christmas traditions and symbols, and where they originally came from. In case the title didn't tip you off, there are many themes, dates, and concepts borrowed from other traditions that make up our current celebration. Some of them can be argued, but IMHO, it's really immaterial - it is not the origination of a tradition, but the emphasis of the *current celebration* that makes it what it is. By that argument, one could nearly say that Christmas' meaning has nearly completely morphed again from a religious holiday to a commercial one. At any rate, it's an interesting read.
