But I'm getting bored too <wg>. But there's *still* the gap of nobody actually bringing a tree *inside* until Martin Luther (and that's just on hearsay). The first actual *known* tree was one of the Elizabeth's (I'll have to look it up - but it had absolutely *nothing* to do with the ancient Yule ceremonies, although people *obviously* have been trying to trace it back to that very strenously <wg>). But I really *would* prefer the whole *month* of orgy-ism of the Bachanalli - the Romans *definitely* knew how to have *fun* <wg>. I *like* discovering the pagan (not "heathen") origins of holidays and dates, calendars, etc., and *not* the "Christian hysteria" that often gets the *facts* so laughably *wrong* (or tragically, as the case may be). So we disagree on the 4th century's syncretism - but they *had* tried to snuff all the "pagan" stuff out for the 3 centuries *before* that! (I tend to be on the side of "so, who can blame them?", but obviously Ibud does <wg> - considering that the tree is the *least* documented as coming from pagan origins, he's going to have a *very* rough Christmas <wg>, but it *does* look like he's mixed up the maypole with the christmas tree <wg>, which *was* danced around <g>, as a fertility rite <wg>.) So, to *really* make it pagan, we need to keep it *outside* and *living* (which was the whole point - that it *survived* the winter! <g>) So, have a tree, or don't have a tree - nobody really *cares*, except obviously the person in RL you're probably losing this argument to <wg>.
