I'll take your clarification, "I'm not sure xmas trees are in fact a
heathen custom," at face value. My remark above reflects the apparent
justification of xmas trees on the grounds that they weren't carved
into actual Baals.

OK.

Note that the popular work denouncing xmas (and many other Catholic
traditions), "The Two Babylons", is absolutely rotten scholarship. But
independently of that source, it's clear enough that the trees are
borrowed from Germanic pagan sources. (Other Christmas traditions are
borrowed from Celtic and Druidic worship.)
