In other words, identifying the specific examples of "vain heathen
ways" in Jeremiah 10, and arguing that any "vain heathen ways" not
specifically forbidden are allowed. IOW, loopholes.

It's a custom, borrowed from heathen. Circumstantial evidence is very
strong here.
