Sorry, you've lost that argument. The 14th amendment was
specifically written to guarantee that every citizen had
Constitutional rights which could not be abrogated by the
states. That includes the 1st Amendment rights. 

In fact, what the 14th Amendment really did was in effect
to make the 1st Amendment apply as Madison, an important 
author of the Bill of Rights, had originally meant for it
to apply all along--to restrict not only what the Federal 
government could do, but also the states could do as well. 
You see, Madison was for people having rights, and seeing 
that they were protected, instead of just being merely
concerned about who the violator of those rights were.
